M.I.A. x Versus Versace.

Well, well, well. It seems as if M.I.A. is a lady of her word! (Not that we ever doubted her, of course.) Granted, it was starting to feel a little bit “girl who cried Medusa head” after the rapper first alluded to her Versus Versace collab in November of last year, gave us radio silence about the alleged line for ten months, and then spilled another confirmation of the project to an unsuspecting WWD reporter during Paris Fashion Week. Oh and BTW, she said last month that not only would it happen, but it was on its way out in two weeks. We were all like, SCURRT! Pump the breaks. TWO WEEKS? That sounds cray. Cray but true, we’ve learned, as the collaboration was officially announced by Versace today and is set to hit shelves on October 16th. (OK, so technically more like 3 weeks, but we’ll let it slide because GIMME.)

Want more deets? It’s gonna cost ya. The capsule collection for Versace’s lower-priced line will feature 19 pieces for men and women, including coats, dresses, t-shirts and printed jeans. According to M.I.A., the designs were “inspired by the creativity of fashion bootleggers,” which basically means it’s meant to look like a knock-off. Yup. Real Versace made to look like fake Versace made to look like real Versace. Wait. What? “Versace’s designs have always been copied,” M.I.A. says, “now, it’s Versace that copies the copies, so those that copy must copy the copies.” That's, like, more levels of meta than we can process right now. However, we think this all translates to a ton of logos (#LOGOMANIA) mixed with lots of graphic prints.
“I adore the energy of the street,” Dame Donatella elaborated on the collab. “So when M.I.A. proposed to expose the issue of counterfeit Versace pieces by creating a collaboration inspired by these items, I thought it was an incredible idea. The collection represents all that I love of the new Versus Versace: it’s fast, it’s noisy, it’s brazen and it blends the world of music with that of fashion. I can’t wait to see it worn.”
Feel free to send us some samples, D, and we’d be happy to show you how we'd wear it. Get a sneek peak of the collection before it hits stores here. (P.S. M.I.A.’s new album, Matangi, drops on November 5th.)
